There is no universal formula for determining the proper height of the space between the countertop and the bottom of the wall cabinets, but different designers have different theories about how to determine the best height for the backsplash. As a fellow professional kitchen designer and CKD, Susan, wrote in her blog The Kitchen Designer, “If the height of the backsplash is not considered carefully, comfort and function could very well be at risk and affect one’s lifestyle in the kitchen – for a very long time.”
When researching kitchen backsplash height, you’re likely to come across various claims for the “standard” height being anywhere from 15″ to 24.” But if you review the measurements provided by the National Kitchen & Bath Association in the 40 Kitchen Planning Guidelines, you will not find one for backsplashes. Susan makes a great point, however, in her blog as she attempts to answer the question of how to calculate kitchen backsplash height; while aesthetics, storage needs, layout and appliances will all become factors, the height of the backsplash should be determined by the height of the homeowners, particularly the one who spends the most time in the kitchen.
